Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
The above lines are from a poem in ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA, which more or less sum up the magical film. After LUCK BY CHANCE, director Zoya Akhtar has come up with another winner; an adventure ride, full of life.

The road movie begins with Kabir (Abhay Deol) proposing his girlfriend Natasha (Kalki Koechlin). Before he ties the knot, he plans to celebrate his remaining bachelor days in style! So along with his best childhood buddies, Imraan (Farhan Akhtar) and Arjun (Hrithik Roshan), he sets out on a road trip in the beautiful terrains of Spain. Our 'mantal buoys' don't really start on a great note as the workaholic Arjun can't stay away from his stock broking office work back in London. He even stops the car in the middle of the road, wears his tie and does a video conference through his laptop. He gets so annoying that Imraan has to eventually throw his cell phone out of the car.

As the road trip progresses, they meet a gorgeous diving instructor Laila (Katrina Kaif) who ends up spending a few days with the boys. The road trip eventually turns out to be a life-transforming trip for the trio as they end up learning and unlearning many things.

ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA starts on a promising note and keeps getting better every minute. The lack of drama in the first half is compensated by the fabulous camaraderie between the characters. There are many light-hearted moments throughout the film, and none of them are forced or of the 'trying-to-be-funny' types. The Doordarshan scene is sure to have you in splits!

Like Arjun tells Imraan to let go as he's about to sky dive from 15000 feet, the film too, is all about letting go of things. It's also about enjoying each and every moment of life. Apart from some of the scenes between Arjun and Laila in the second half, it subtly says a lot about life and friendship, without being preachy. The poems by Imraan (penned by Javed Akhtar) are simply majestic and elevate the proceedings to a great extent. The way in which Imraan and the boys meet Imraan's father Salman (Naseeruddin Shah) is deftly connected. Although Imraan is skeptical about meeting his father, he ends up calling him in a desperate situation. It ends on a beautiful note and leaves you on a high.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is well-suited for the film with Dil Dhadakne Do being the best number. The songs sound much better on the big screen. Anand Subaya's editing is superb. Carlos Catalan's cinematography is mind-blowing. The sky diving sequence is awe-inspiring.

Abhay Deol delivers a fine performance. Hrithik Roshan proves yet again what a great actor he is! Note the scene after the deep sea diving experience. Farhan Akhtar gets the best lines (he has written the dialogues himself) and acts wonderfully. Watch out for the scene in which he meets Naseeruddin Shah. Katrina Kaif looks beautiful and acts well. Kalki Koechlin is fine in her small role. Naseeruddin Shah's cameo is passable.
