Sheeja Mathews, a Bangalore based HR professional has made history on her own terms by becoming the first woman in India to own a Harley Davidson. With the purchase, she moves from riding a Yamaha Rajdoot 350 for the past decade, to an 'Iron 883’, which she hopes to ride to work once every week at least.
The thought for an upgrade crossed her mind once the Harley Davidson showroom opened in Bangalore, and the company informed her of being their only woman buyer in India. The ex-showroom price tag came at Rs. 6.5 lakh though the Mathews family has spent almost Rs. 8 lakh on their Harley Davidson purchase.
Having been a drag racer Sheeja at present drives a Chevrolet Cruze, and Tata Safari, apart from biking. Harley Davidson set shop in the Indian market last year and announced an assembly plant set up in India. Iron 833 and Super Low models are to be assembled at Bawal facility in Haryana. The Indian chapter of Harley Davidson has a 15 model strong portfolio at price points Rs. 5.5 lakh to Rs. 38.66 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
