Dayanidhi Maran

For most of the last decade, Dayanidhi Maran has been the face of the DMK in Delhi. As part of the Sun network family, he was a real power centre. Today, both his political and business interests are at the crossroads.
Allegations of blackmail, corruption, arm twisting - the clock has been ticking for Maran for some time now, and with his resignation from the Union Cabinet on Thursday, the floodgates could open for some of those allegations to turn into criminal prosecution.
Allegation no 1: Dayanidhi Maran allegedly blackmailed no one less than the Prime Minister in deciding the spectrum policy.
A letter accessed by CNN-IBN revealed how the then telecom minister almost instructed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to change the term of reference of the GoM as per his demands.
Allegation no 2: Dayanidhi Maran armtwisted Sivasanakaran of Aircel and forced him to sell his stake to a company of Maran's choice.
The CBI in its status report to the Supreme Court has said that an element of coercion did exist in Maran's dealings with Aircel.
Sivasankaran in his statement to CBI alleged that license to Aircel was denied for two years but the file was immediately cleared by Maran when Malaysia based Maxis became stake holder of Aircel.
CBI status report says Maran deliberately sat on Aircel's application even when DoT officials had unanimously recommended that the company be given the license.
CBI is also investigating if Maxis invested Rs 750 crore in the Sun Network in return for this favour.
Allegation no 3: Maran misused his office and set up a BSNL exchange at his residence itself.
The exchange was benefiting the Maran family owned Sun network in its operations.
Dayanidhi Maran has stoutly defended himself against all these allegations but his resignation on Thursday showed how much of pressure was exerted on the media baron turned politician by these allegations.
The CBI sources have said that Maran will be questioned before the PE turns into an FIR and that this will be his chance to defend himself before the CBI. But if the CBI status report in SC is anything to go by, the clock has started ticking for yet another DMK MP.
