Bersih 2.0's application for a permit to hold a rally at the Merdeka Stadium today was turned down by the police, and the location has been declared off limits to the public.Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkarnain Abdul Rahman said police received the application from a Bersih representative yesterday.
“It was submitted by a female programme officer from the Selangor Community Awareness Society, who represented Bersih 2.0.
“However, after considering the public's safety, I had decided not to allow the rally to take place in Merdeka Stadium. The rejection letter was served to the applicant about 2pm. However, they still have 24 hours to make an appeal to the state police chief,” he said yesterday.
Zulkarnain said the decision was made after considering that the gathering would disrupt traffic and the public from carrying on with their daily routine, and those who are adamant will be dealt with in accordance to the law.
“Umno Youth had also applied for a rally permit last week, which was rejected too,” he added.
Zulkarnain said the vicinity of Merdeka Stadium will be closed to the public to ensure that no illegal rally will take place.
“If Bersih supporters are spotted at any of our roadblocks, police will immediately order them to turn around.
“But, if they are spotted with anything that represents Bersih in the city tomorrow and try to join the rally, police will detain them.
“This also goes for the 91 who have been ordered to stay away from several locations tomorrow. They will be detained if they go against the court order,” he said.
