Students in Indiana's public schools will reportedly no longer have to learn cursive writing, starting this fall.
The state's board of education has told teachers they can continue teaching cursive writing, or can stop altogether, according to Thursday's Terre Haute Tribune Star.
Instead, students will be expected to sharpen their typing skills, the report said.
Vigo County education officials said handwriting is part of the curriculum in Grades 1 to 3, with cursive being taught in Grade 3. Keyboarding also is taught in the elementary school grades, with advanced skills such as word processing coming in middle school and high school.
Officials said a "healthy mix" of handwriting and keyboarding skills is important.
