Central Excise


The first quarter (Q1) of the current fiscal, 2011-12 has witnessed an increase of 216%  in the service tax evasion and 98% rise in the central excise. The director general of central excise intelligence (DGCEI) — an apex intelligence and investigating agency has booked 83 cases of
service tax evasion amounting to Rs 1,651.3 crore as  against Rs 522.2 crore during the same period last fiscal.
In central excise, the duty evasion detected is to the tune of Rs 227.4 crore, a rise of 98% vis-à-vis Rs 114.6 crore during the year ago period.
During the investigation, the agency recovered Rs 205 crore from assesses, a rise of 164%, towards unpaid central excise duty and service tax during the current quarter as against a recovery of Rs 77.6 crore during the same period in the previous fiscal.
Major service tax evasion cases were detected under the taxable service categories of renting of immovable property service, business support service, telecommunication service, management, maintenance or repair service and commercial or industrial construction service.
