The National Nutrition Council-6 has announced that this year’s celebration of Nutrition Month is anchored on the promotion and support of exclusive breastfeeding.
Based on the celebration’s talking points prepared by the NNC, the theme “Isulong ang BRESTFEEDING TSEK – Tama, Sapat, EKslusibo supports the call of the Department of Health for all sectors to help promote, protect and support correct breastfeeding practices.
Dr. Anthony Redaniel, MDGF-2030 Field coordinator for exclusive breastfeeding, said “Tama” stands for the correct practice of allowing immediate skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby after birth, and initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour of life.
He said “Sapat” is meant to assure the mother that little breastmilk is enough for the first week and that frequent breastfeeding ensures continuous breastmilk supply to respond to the increasing needs of the baby.
“EKslusibo” on the other hand, Redaniel said, advocates that for the first six months, only breastmilk and no other liquid should be given to the baby as it has all the nutrients and water that the baby needs.
“After which, the baby should be given appropriate complementary foods while continually breastfeeding,” Redaniel said.
On the other hand, NNC Regional Coordinator Nona Tad-y said during a press briefing held July 4, that breastfeeding ranks among the most effective interventions to improve child’s survival.
Tad-y said the World Health Organization has estimated that high coverage of optimal breastfeeding practices could avert 13 percent of the 10.3 million annual deaths of children five years old and below.
In the Philippines, the 7th National Nutrition Survey of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) showed that only 36 in every 100 of infants 0-5 months old, were exclusively breastfed.
Tad-y said there is not much fanfare in this year’s celebration of Nutrition Month, but they are intensifying information and education campaign among the communities and sectors in the region.
She said under the MDGF-2030 program, Iloilo City and the municipality of Carles have been identified as pilot sites for the promotion and practice of exclusive breastfeeding, in the region.
Tad-y added that each province and municipality in the region had their own activities to launch Nutrition Month.
Carles, as pilot town, will have a forum with mothers from all over the municipality, then a feeding session with malnourished children, while the local DepEd will hold its selection and awarding of the best Breastfeeding Jingle, from among the compositions of school children.
Meanwhile, the NNC said there are government programs and policies that promote, protest and support breastfeeding, like, Executive Order 51 or the “National Milk code of Marketing of breastmilk Substitutes, Breastmilk Supplements and Other Related Products, Penalizing Violation Thereof and other Purposes;" RA 7600 or the “Rooming-In and Breastfeeding Act of 1992;" and RA 10028 or “Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009.”
